“I have come that they may have life,
and that they may have it more abundantly.”
(Jn. 10:10)

Nestling in sylvan surroundings and overlooked by the Shrine of Our Lady of the Mount, the location of “JIVANVIKAS SADAN” popularly known as the “Retreat House” provides a calm and conducive environment for silence and solitude, prayer and reflection. It was founded in 1931 through the untiring efforts of the late Fr. Adrian Le Tellier, SJ, a Belgian Jesuit belonging to the Calcutta Jesuit Province and founder of the Retreat movement in Mumbai.

Jivan Vikas Sadan is registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950, and has been managed by a secular Board of Trustees which has lay people and Jesuits working together for the integral growth of the human person.

Jivan Vikas Sadan, a Centre for the fullness of life, strives to promote holistic growth by fostering universal sister/brotherhood resulting in peace and harmony for one and all. It is open to all, irrespective of caste, creed or community. Various spiritual practices of enlightenment lead to effective integration of body, mind, heart and spirit. A deep experience of personal peace prepares them to become effective artisans of peace in a world of escalating violence.

Jesuits are well known for exploring new frontiers. Besides Ignatian retreats new forms of spiritual practice such as the ‘Awareness Retreat’ by Fr. Anthony J. D’Souza, sj the present Provincial of the Bombay Province, and ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming’ (NLP) facilitated by Fr. Dick McHugh sj, an internationally renowned practitioner and trainer, also draw many participants. ‘InterPlay’ and ‘Movement Meditation’ retreats facilitated by Fr. Prashant Olalekar sj, the founder of InterPlay India are the latest addition. The Intercultural Exchange for Global Peace (IEGP) involving American and Australian InterPlayers is held for about 3 weeks in January in Mumbai and other parts of India.

“Engaged Encounter” weekends for couples planning to get married and “Marriage Encounter” for married couples are regularly conducted here under the spiritual guidance of the evergreen Fr. Daniel Ferrando SJ., who played a major role in establishing these movements in India.

The Konkani Charismatic group and the Family Apostolate (Kalyan diocese) have their weekend retreats once a month.

On the first Saturday of the month from 9-12 noon Neville Sanjaya D’Cunha leads a group on Healing through Relaxation.

Every Thursday evening at 7 pm there is “Satya Meditation” facilitated by Willy Doctor and her team of dedicated volunteers.

The facilities of Jivan Vikas Sadan are available for seminars, orientation days, leadership, character formation, vocational guidance courses, and other social and cultural activities.

Spiritual directors are also available for individual and personal guidance.
